Breastfeeding Versus Formula

Breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your baby. It contains nutrients that are just right for your baby. However, making a decision to breastfeed or formula feeds your baby is a personal one. Breast milk is the ideal formula for newborns. So, if you have to feed your baby with formula, make sure it is government approved. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding when possible. Although many doctors recommend breastfeeding some prefer formula feeding. There are many advantages of breastfeeding a newborn. Breast milk contains antibodies to help fight off infections. It is highly nutritious rich in protein and zinc. Breast milk is perfect on the baby's delicate digestive system. Therefore, babies have less diarrhea and constipation. The lactose, protein, whey and casein and fat in breast milk are easily digested. Breast milk helps build the brain in newborns. Breast milk contains carbohydrates rich in lactose which promotes intestinal growth and brain development. Furthermore, breast milk is free and economical. Breast milk is convenient and there are no bottles to sterilize or fix. Breast milk is always sterile. It is never contaminated by dirty bottles or water, which can give a baby diarrhea. By breastfeeding, it helps the mom's uterus contract back to its original size sooner. Breastfeeding moms cuddle their baby closely many times a day. Many women experience much pleasure and joy from this closeness. Formula feeding babies do not experience such closeness all the time. On the other hand, some formulas are iron fortified.Commercial formulas try to put in proteins, sugar, fat, vitamins and minerals that a baby needs. However, nothing can compare to the nutrients found in breast milk. Formulas lack vital nutrients needed for babies to digest. Formulas do not have lactose. Formulas always tastes the same but, breast milk doesn't. In conclusion, while formula provides your baby with the necessary nutrients, no formula contains antibodies found in breast milk. The formula can be very expensive too. Therefore, making the right choice for your baby whether to breastfeed or use formula should be a decision make carefully before deciding which one to choose for your baby.Of course, as a Lactation Consultant,I am going to promote breastfeeding. However, I know that sometimes my moms have to supplement with formula as well and in some rare cases feed their babies with the only formula. Last, of all, moms need to eat right and get plenty of rest because you are important.
