Adderall And Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is best for your baby.  However, sometimes a mom experiences signs of ADD or ADHD, and needs to begin to take an Amphetamine, Dextroamphetamine, a medication called Adderall.  Adderall is a potent and long acting amphetimine that transfers into breast milk.  Therefore, this raises the question of whether it is safe to take while breastfeeding.Adderall, a prescription amphetimine is often prescribed for ADD and ADHD.  It is a nervous system stimulant.  It  should be used caustiously when breastfeeding.  Babies should be monitored carefully.  According to Dr. Thomas Hale, infants should be observed for agitation and  weight gain, insomnia, poor sleeping habits, poor appetite and agitation.  If the baby is not showing any of theses signs, you do not have to be too concerned.Sometimes moms may experience side effects too. Side effects for moms may  include:  nervousness, restlessness, excitability, dizziness, headache, fear, anxiety, agitation, tremor, weakness, blurred vision, sleep problem, diarrhea, stomach pain, dry mouth, constipation, loss of interest in sex, loss of appetite, blood pressure problems orheart rate increase.  Moms should immediately stop using the drug and call her doctor if she experiences any of these side effects.The mother’s mental health is extremely important .  Therefore, Dr Thomas Hale says that we now know that mother’s mental health is incrediably important to the neurobehavioral development of the infant and poor mental health is much riskier than taking this drug.   If a mother feels she needs this drug in order to be a better person and mother to her baby, she should consult with her doctor and take it as prescribed.  Additionally, It is recommended to take this drug right after a breastfeeding session so this way you minimize exposure.In conclusion, discuss this drug with your doctor and pediatrician while breastfeeding.  Observe your baby and yourself for any signs of side effects while taking Adderall.  I wish all of you a successful journey while breastfeeding your baby.
