Breastfeeding And Jaundice
What is jaundice in a newborn? Jaundice is a condition that makes a baby's skin and the white part of the eye turn yellow. It happens if the baby's body has too much bilirubin in the baby's blood (Hyperbilirubinemia). Bilirubin is made when the body tries to break down old red blood cells. Jaundice has to be watched because too much bilirubin in the blood can cause brain damage (Kernicterus). Additionally, it can lead to hearing loss, learning disabilities or academic problems in school. In the end, jaundice leaves the baby's body through its urine or stool. What is breastfeeding jaundice? Breastfeeding jaundice occurs when a baby is not breastfeeding well or the mother's milk is slow to come in.Therefore, the baby is not getting the adequate amount of breast milk. What is breast milk jaundice? Newborn jaundice is when a baby has high levels of bilirubin in the blood. Breastmilk jaundice can occur in the first few weeks of life and peak at 2-3 weeks. It may occur because substances in the mom's breast milk are affecting how bilirubin breaks down in the baby's liver. High bilirubin levels can be harmful to the baby's brain and other organs. What are the causes of jaundice? Jaundice can start right after birth. In fact, bilirubin is a yellow pigment that is created as the body gets rid of red blood cells. The liver helps break down bilirubin so that the baby is able to remove it from its body in the urine or stool. What are the symptoms of jaundice? The baby may have their white of their eyes look more yellow as well as their skin. What are exams and tests for jaundice? The doctor will do a bilirubin test to see the baby's level. Blood may be drawn from the baby to check several things in baby's blood. What are the treatments for jaundice? It is up to the doctor to decide on what course of treatment they will choose. Sometimes, a baby may have to stay in the hospital. The baby may be placed under artificial lights, phototherapy either in the hospital or arrangements can be made to do these lights at home. Breastfeeding your baby often can help decrease bilirubin levels because the baby is drinking more fluids. Sometimes, the doctor will ask you to give formula as a supplement in addition to your breast milk so that the baby can receive a little more fluids for a few days. What can parents expect as the outcome of treatment? The baby should recover quickly with the right treatment. I myself have had two sons who were jaundice for a few weeks. One son had to have lights while the other one recovered with additional fluids. However, it is scary to see your baby yellow. It may take a few weeks for your baby to fully recover. I see many babies who have jaundice in my private practice as a Lactation Consultant. I tell the moms to keep the babies well hydrated. Therefore, frequent feedings are encouraged.Never hesitate to consult with your doctor if your have any questions about jaundice in your baby. They are there to help you and reassure you that your baby will be okay.
